Located near Asheville, North Carolina, America's largest privately owned home was built by George W. Vanderbilt, heir to the steam ship and railroad tycoon Cornelius Vanderbilt, his grandfather. Consisting of 250 rooms and 175,000 square feet, the estate was opened on Christmas Eve 1895 following nearly six years of construction. From the original 125,000 acres of property, about 87,000 acres were sold to the U.S. Government that is today part of Pisgah National Forest.
